Why I talk about “politics” so much

I have politics in quotes because the word has been given such a negative connotation.  It literally and simply means “governance” as in how we are governed.  America is unique in this regard; in our constitutional republic, “we the people” are ultimately in the role of “Caesar.”  So, how do you render to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s (Matthew 22:21)? Here is another passage that speaks to the issue: 1 Peter 2:11-17. In the context of civic responsibility, this passage  exhorts us to submit in verse 13, do right in verse 15, act as free men in verse 16, and in verse 17, honor all men, love the brotherhood, fear God, honor the king.  Our “salt and light” responsibility in America is unique in history and among nations.  I believe it is our duty, yes duty, to stand up, speak out, do justly, stand for truth, preserve our values, and be the best Christian American citizen we can be.  This is a responsibility that Christians should take very seriously.  Because politics is dirty it needs to be cleaned up!  In a republic, government is a reflection of the condition of the governed.  Corruption, complacency, factionalism, pragmatism and the like are simply mirror images of the populace.  Socialism is pressing in and most Americans don’t even recognize it or see it as a threat to our society.  If we are to survive as a culture we must wake up, get informed and get involved.  We need spiritual renewal and awakening to initiate the change.  Only then will there be a new birth of freedom in America.  Politics must not change us; we must change politics…”One nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.”  Fear God, honor the king. Samuel Rutherford wrote “Lex Rex,” law is king.  In America, we the people took that to heart and lifted the Constitution as the highest law in the land. We put it there, God has honored it, and we must preserve it. We must shake the salt and shine the light. That’s how I feel about it–that’s why I talk about it.
