God in America: The Inconvenient Truth

With President Obama omitting the word “Creator” as the originator of our inalienable rights in his quotation of The Declaration of Independence, Christians cannot help but be sensitized to such an omission. In recent days, there have been the controversies of our national motto and other references to God in the Capitol Visitor Center, the Architect of the Capitol’s Flag certificate flap, the Washington Monument capstone incident, Pledge of Allegiance lawsuits, coinage references as well as other questioned acknowledgements of Diety. For government and academia, acknowledgement of God is the inconvenient truth. How inconvenient it is of our founding fathers to reference the Almighty. How dare Lincoln and others not just name God but appeal to Him in reverential humility and submission. How unenlightened it is for us to have to accurately quote past presidents, justices, legislators and leaders in their liberal references to the Divine:  God, Creator, Sovereign, Divine Providence, etc. — how passé, how politically incorrect, how insensitive to non-believers. Even what has been indelibly carved into stone edifices is being quietly denied by historical revisionists as they resolutely go about their work of rewriting, reshaping and refashioning America in another image–the very image and likeness of humanity itself. The builders of Babel tried this once before. God will not be mocked…when we sow the wind, we will reap the whirlwind (Romans and Hosea). In our relatively short two-hundred year history, we have seen the blessings of God poured out upon America in almost every way–physical and spiritual bounty–all because we sought to voluntarily give God His rightful place among us. But where are those volunteers? What happens when we choose not to acknowledge Him and remove all reference to Him from our public places, our educational institutions, and national rhetoric? America’s abundance now crowds her memory and, as mammon does, robs God of His rightful place. You cannot serve God and mammon. They are mutually exclusive. America is teetering on the very balancing edge of the precipice, morally, economically, spiritually. Although inconvenient to many, this Truth unleashes consequences towards those who deny Him and live ungratefully and unfaithfully. The God who is richly benevolent is also the God who is perfectly just. My prayer is that it is not too late for America to return to Him.

Our father’s God, to Thee, Author of liberty, To Thee we sing;
Long may our land be bright with freedom’s holy light;
Protect us by Thy might, Great God, our King.

If God’s people will humble themselves, pray, seek His face and repent, then He will hear, forgive, and heal their land. We must return to the love we had at first. Reliance on Him, renewal and rebirth are our only hope.
