A New Year–A New Focus

Have I slept and worked through the month of January???  It has been one month since my last post! I am grateful that when we are focused on other things, our God watches over us and neither slumbers nor sleeps (Psalm 121:4). January 2011 has been a very transitional and transformational month for me personally. My focus has been on those transitions. Over the next three months, I will step down as President of FreeWay Foundation and Pillsbury College & Seminary and take the reins of The Pillar Foundation as its new Director. I have been associated with FreeWay and Pillsbury since 1991 and on staff for the past five years. I have been teaching at Pillar for the past six years. I am grateful for God’s faithfulness and direction in my life and I am excited about what He has in store for the future!

The transformational part of January came this past week with the annual Educational Policy Conference–not just informational but inspirational, as well. Dealing with the themes of courage and conviction, we heard from 28 well-known speakers, authors, historians and educators on topics of great concern to our American culture and educational system. From Bonhoeffer to the birth of America, we heard presentations that informed, inspired, and engaged participants to “fight the good fight” of preserving our culture.  As a participant, I am so grateful for Donna Hearne and her co-workers who have put together this annual conference for the past 22 years and have, with servant hearts, helped us to integrate our Christian faith with our secularized culture. Again, I was inspired and activated, especially in this new year and new focus for my life.

Today, February 1, is the anniversary of the publishing of Julia Ward Howe’s civil war era poem, The Battle Hymn of the Republic. Her inspired lyrics motivate me to partner with what God is doing in our land.  With courage and conviction, we must seek and stand for His righteousness, no matter what the cost. I encourage you to meditate on these lyrics and the Biblical images and principles they victoriously reflect:

Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord;
He is trampling out the vintage where the grapes of wrath are stored;
He hath loosed the fateful lightning of His terrible swift sword;
His truth is marching on.
Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! Glory! Glory! Hallelujah!
Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! His truth is marching on.

I have seen Him in the watch fires of a hundred circling camps
They have builded Him an altar in the evening dews and damps;
I can read His righteous sentence by the dim and flaring lamps;
His day is marching on.
Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! Glory! Glory! Hallelujah!
Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! His day is marching on.

I have read a fiery Gospel writ in burnished rows of steel;
“As ye deal with My contemners, so with you My grace shall deal”;
Let the Hero, born of woman, crush the serpent with His heel,
Since God is marching on.
Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! Glory! Glory! Hallelujah!
Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! Since God is marching on.

He has sounded forth the trumpet that shall never call retreat;
He is sifting out the hearts of men before His judgment seat;
Oh, be swift, my soul, to answer Him! be jubilant, my feet;
Our God is marching on.
Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! Glory! Glory! Hallelujah!
Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! Our God is marching on.

In the beauty of the lilies Christ was born across the sea,
With a glory in His bosom that transfigures you and me:
As He died to make men holy, let us live to make men free;
[originally …let us die to make men free]
While God is marching on.
Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! Glory! Glory! Hallelujah!
Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! While God is marching on.

He is coming like the glory of the morning on the wave,
He is wisdom to the mighty, He is honor to the brave;
So the world shall be His footstool, and the soul of wrong His slave,
Our God is marching on.
Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! Glory! Glory! Hallelujah!
Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! Our God is marching on.
