Marriage and the Number ‘One’

You cannot change the number 1. 1=1…it always will. The reason it does is because “1” never changes—it is what it is—simply and only 1. That is its definition, if you will. The same is true with marriage. Its definition is one man and one woman. That is, one man and one woman “setting up house,” a family, a new societal unit—a very, very unique unit. How unique? Well, it defies logic. It is certainly a mystery. Are you ready for the unique marriage equation? Here it is: 1+1=3. This is the only time this will be true. Our human logic says, “no, no, no…1+1 must =2.” The mystery of 1+1=3 (which does defy logic…after all, birth is a miracle!) can only happen in the context of traditional, God-ordained marriage (which, incidentally, is not just a piece of legal paper). Changing the definition of marriage will never be able to add up to 3, it will always and only be 2. Why? Because the 2 cannot become 1!!! (Have I thoroughly confused you, now?!)

Jesus put it this way…

And He answered and said, “Have you not read that He who created them from the beginning made them male and female, and said, ‘For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh’?  So they are no longer two, but one flesh. What therefore God has joined together, let no man separate.” – Matthew 19:4-6

A so-called marriage of anyone other than a male and a female cannot produce another male or female. Any other combination cannot “become one flesh,” cannot reproduce, and cannot be a marriage! “1+1=3” (bona fide marriage) is indeed a mystery! And that also is scriptural…

For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and shall be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh. This mystery is great; but I am speaking with reference to Christ and the church. – Ephesians 5:31,32

The mysterious beauty and reality of marriage is that it reflects the relationship of Jesus and His bride, the church. This is what exalts marriage—genuine marriage—here on earth because of what marriage typifies, the ultimate and life-giving union of Christ and His bride for whom He died. We must stand up and guard this truth, and we must stand up and live this truth. The sanctity of genuine marriage must once again be restored to its rightful place in our society.
